Hi again Jay,
What is your connection to Nancy and the Stein family? I will be going to Salt Lake City later this month and hopefully will be able to find the town in Mecklenburg where Henry and his family lived. He came to the U.S. in 1855, was in the East for a time, then came to Milwaukee, Wis. where he married Johanna Stadige on Feb. 16, 1863. She came to this country, also in 1855, with her family when she was 17 years of age. She also came from Mecklenburg and I wonder if the families knew each other from there. Henry owned and directed Stein's Great Union Band and founded the St. Paul Musician's Union in 1878. He organized, and for a time managed and directed the First and Second Regimental Bands of the Minnesota National Guard. He was one of the original members of the St. Paul Symphony Orchestra playing with them from 1906 until 1914.
I have a newspaper photo taken about 1890 of Stein's Great Union Band, but don't know if it will scan well. Let me know if you'd like it.
By the way, the correct birth date of Herman Theodore Stein is Sept. 6, 1863.

Marianne
