My cousin Pat Shanks has discovered that the family story of George and Carmalita Steinberg settling in 'Hills Ferry' first, in the 1850's is not correct! They FIRST settled in the gold mining town of 'Chinese Camp' in the 1850's. There, George took on a partner, and started supplying beef to the miner's. Later, for reasons we don't know for sure yet, he sold out, and they DID move to the town of 'Hills Ferry' for a while, where my Grandfather, George Andrew Steinberg was born in 1867. To the best of our knowledge, the rest of the story is correct. Thanks to Pat Shanks for her very efficient searching skills.
