I'm grasping at straws with this one but please hear me out. My great grandfather, Benjamin Bailey arrived in San Fransisco from Boston in 1849 by the ship Sweden. He was employed by the Roxbury Sagamore Mining Company. In 1855 he was married to Sarah Margaret Paterson. In 1857 a daughter was born, named Susan Adelaide STEINBERG Bailey. I don't have a clue where the name Steinberg comes from. I have never found Benjamin's birth in Boston so don't know his parent's names (wondering if his mother was a Steinberg). On the other hand, sometimes children were named for friends or business partners. It might be that he was friends with your George Steinberg. I said I was grasping at straws! Do you know the name of George Steinberg's partner at Chinese Camp? In 1858 Benjamin is listed as co-owner of Bailey and Murphy saloon in San Fransisco.
Thanks, Virginia.
