Starting Sept. 5, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.

A gedcom is the type of file that is universally accepted (as far as I know) by the various genealogy applications. Example: I am using Family Tree Maker. I can save my gen file as a gedcom and send it to you, and you can load it into a different type of genealogy program. Sometimes you will see on some sites "download gedcom" and that is what it means.
