Hi Rafael,
I just found your post from January. According to HouseofNames.com, STEINMETZ was first found in Austria. I've heard of some either coming from or going to Russia as well.

Spelling variations of this family name include: Steinmez, Steinmetzen, Steinmetzel, Steinmetze, Steinmetzer, Steinmitz and many more.

As far back as I can trace with my family, however, my Steinmetz's were in the Prussian province of Hessen-Nassau (now Hesse, Germany). Specifically they came from the town of Eschwege-an-der-Werra. If they did originally come from Austria, they moved north from there into Germany.
