The name Steinmetz is of German origin but the Steinmetz family are of Jewish ancenstry. The name Steinmetz means "Worker in Stone" John was born in Germany in 1756 and then came to this country soon after his birth. Not much is known about his early life but from an old accounting book he was a shoemaker by trade. He married Hannah Hays, born in Va. in 1770 and had nine children. John died Aug 10, 1832 and is buried in a private cemetery known as Boyle Cemetery located about six miles SE of Mt Vernon and about 1-1/2 miles east of Hunts Station in Pleasant Twp. The grave is marked with a flat sandstone marker. After a brief time Hannah moved in with her son Samuel in Mt Vernon and died Feb 11, 1840. She is buried in Mound View cemetery at Mt Vernon and the grave is marked with a marble monument. The ancestry of the Steinmetz family has a connection to the May Flower through John B. Steinmetz and Belinda Eleanor Allen. Belinda was the Daughter of Asahel Allen and Content Wing.
