Recently, I downloaded a file from ancestry.com that contained William Thornton and Elizabeth Stell, it had no dates for them. Normally, I wouldn't download a file unless I could tie it into my own. I have just started researching my mother's lines, and want to do this while she is still here to tell me what she remembers.
William Thornton and Elizabeth Still/Stell/Steel were my 2nd ggps. My mother remembers her grandmother Mary Ann Thornton Davis and her Aunt Nina Killian telling her that a grandmother was Sallie Hogg. And THAT is the reason why I downloaded that file. It listed Sarah HOGG, that particular spelling, as the mother of Elizabeth and Elizabeth was the wife of William Thornton. And out of 300+ William Thorntons, this was the only one that had a William married to an Elizabeth with a similar last name. I have seen a copy of their marriage license. Elizabeth's last name could be nearly anything, Still/Stell/Steel/Stull/Stett.
I found William and Elizabeth in 1850 Randolph Co GA, both about the same age of middle 20s to early 30s. They had a daughter Lucy, the eldest, a son or two, then a daughter Julia Amanda. Another clue to the Stell file, Elizabeth from the file had a sister named Amanda, who had married Elijah Thornton.
Grandma Mary Ann told Mom that Lucy remembered being on a ship. Had they sailed from GA? The family settled in Sykes, Winn Par, LA where Mary Ann was born after 1860.
I believe there was a son named Wiley Mayfield and another named Frederick, called Fed. There may have been others, my notes are not in front of me at present.
Mary Ann m. John Dallas Davis had several children, only two lived to adulthood, Joseph Edward Davis b. 188? d. 1964 and Alma Amelia. Mary Ann died abt 194?.
Does anyone else have these names in their family? Or a similar story that when Sallie Hogg died she was buried near the side of the road? Or of sailing from GA to LA?
I would really love to be able to tie into this Stell Gedcom.
