The name is definitely German.
The oldest traces I have located are going back to 1208 in Spessart/Germany. The family was nobility (von Stenger)
1525 : Peasants War in Germany, the family was on the peasans side, they lost, they had to go.
The family devided in " groups :
1. close to Berlin where they mostly Protestant clergy and achieved a couple of theology treaties still in museums
2. in the Ruhr region (North West) where been again after sometime troubble with the autorities and requirement to go. they joined with 200 other families the last crusade from the German equivalent of the Templar in the today Baltic States and became military and further joined the Imperial Guard in Russia. They have been high ranking officers in the White armies during the civil war 1917 - 1922 in Russia. Few came to France where they are buried. The family place is still standing in Saint Petersburg. More to trace is difficult actualy.
3. close to the German city of Nurnberg in a sort of refugees camp. an opportunity braught them to the region of Goetzenbrück where they started again the family trade : Glass and Cristal Master; They founded about 150 glass factories and about 25 Miles south of Goetzenbrück (around Sarebourg) an important group of the family settled down (for this group all church registers are available till mid 17th century, the time of the 30 years war when the Swedish army came to burn down churches....
Before that time, nobility archives are helpfull because for a glass and cristal factory you needed sans and wood for the fire place all in the hands of nobility and available only through a contract (indeed good documents as giving a good CV of each party signing it !)
I am from this last group !
I am engaged in computerising about 5000 pages of researches over time !
Best regards
