My grandmother, Friederike Dorothe Stephan (b. 1817) had a brother, Michael Gottlob Carl Stephan (b. 1811). My grandmother married about 1847 in Germany to Johann Gottlieb Kuhling (Kuehling) and they came to America in 1854 and settled in St. Louis, Mo. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Could the Michael who was born in 18ll be your Michael? I have more information to share.
