Well, at least he left a record of himself, though I doubt that was his thinking at the time. And people think the government is intrusive now! Your idea about Whitby seems a good lead. I had taken out a book from the public library on "Tracing Your English Ancestors." The authors indicated that this was "very easy." But, the trick was you needed to have some idea of where in England they might have originated and I had literally no idea. So, using your research, I'll revisit that book. Please let me know if there are documents you have already seen, sent for, etc. so I don't retrace your steps(absolutely no pun intended!). Charlotte
