Sterlings of Pennsylvania
Still on quest to find some information on my great gm, Florence Elizabeth Sterling. She was married to William A. Strause (of Strauss/Strause Family of Berks Co.), circa early 1890's.Couple resided in Philadelphia, PA in the 1890's...and remained married at least up to William's enlistment in Army during Spanish-American War, where she appears on his service records. She then may have died or more probably divorced William a short time after that (circa 1900) ... and we have no record of Florence after that- vanished!! They had two daughters- Mary Magdalene Strause (my GM, br.1894), and Helen Amanda/Elizabeth Strause (b. 1897), who were then raised by the paternal grandparents. Am hoping to one day learn more about Florence ...and her Sterling family.
I would estimate her birthdate as late 1860's, early 1870's(at most)...given daughter's birthdates... Husband William born 1870-71.
I am assuming that her family was from Berks or (more likely) some other county/city of SE PENNA., possibly even Philadelphia.Marraige records in Berks do not record Florence/William's union, so I assume her Sterling family origins lie elsewhere as well...
All we have is her picture in a tiny locket she left to her daughter, my (grand) aunt Helen...
I've had some help from folks- which I've appreciated- but so far the leads don't seem to pan out...(age/dates seem too far off)...Answers probably lie in Phila. records, but I am on West Coast, and access/research with Phila. City not easy via long distance... If anyone has any inkling/suggestions please correspond... Thanks much...
