My family of Steward/Stewarts is from Maine. Loren E. Steward and Jonathan W. Steward were the last to keep the "d" I believe. Their father was Sylvanus Steward born Houlton, ME 1804. The family then removed to Montville, Me., where my great grandfather Edgar Loren Stewart was born. My grandfather, Col. Loren Prescott Stewart contended it was always Stewart, but had gotten changed in immigration. I have also been told this line came to America in the 1700's, but went to Maine, then returned.

Any light you could shed on this branch would be helpful. I know there were Sylvanus Stewards in the Alden tree, but have not found connection. Montville, ME is in the Stewart Clan index, but I have not found the magazine to research it.
