George:Thanks for your followup posting.
First, I found a definition for hayward at hawkshome.net/docs/colonial_occupations.htm.They list a hayward as an inspector of hedges and fences of a parish who also impounded stray beasts.
My line of STEWARDs, gleaned from published secondary sources *appears* to go like this:
1Daniel STEWARD b: July 22, 1697 in Rochester, MA
m. Prudence ?
2 Elkanah STEWARD b: August 12, 1737 in Hardwick, MA
m. Lydia COBB
3 Samuel STEWARD b: December 02, 1763 in Hardwick, MA
m.Chloe BISHOP
m. Sally (Sarah?) EGERY b: Aug 11,1764 in prob.Dartmouth, MA
4 Elkanah STEWARD v b: Abt. 1796 in Barnard, Windsor Co,VT
m. Betsey NEWTON b: Aug 30,1795 in Barnard,Vermont
5 Silas STEWARD b: May 03, 1824 in Pike, Wyoming Co.,NY
m. Ruth WEAVER b: Sep 28, 1825 in Arkwright, Chautauqua Co.,NY
m. Susan Scott in 1877
6 Viola D. STEWARD b: Feb 01, 1856
m. George WILCOX in 1877
The theory you present is consistent with what I have and interesting, as I have no siblings for my 2nd Elkanah at present.
