I'm trying to establish the birth location and validate the family connections of my grandmother May Steward who died in Australia in 1955.
According to her marriage certificate, she was born in about 1901 to John James Steward and Rose Furmage.
The location given in her marriage certificate was 'Auburn, Victoria', but I got a 'No Record' result when I applied to the Victoria, Australia, registry. I received similar notices from adjacent Australian states.
(My daughter, Gabrielle, put the above birth information in the Ancestral File on my behalf.)
May Steward's marriage certificate was witnessed by Susan Gwynne Martin, Guardian.
There's a family rumour that she migrated from England to Australia in about 1913 but I found nothing conclusive in the shipping records, though I still have a few to scroll through. Was she a war orphan? The British service records for the Great War are in a poor state and were of no help to me.
There's also a family rumour that she came from France. With a mother's name like Furmage, this is a possibility. An IGI search for Rose Furmage, in that country was unhelpful.
St Catherine's 1875 Birth Index shows a John James Stewart for Leeds born in 1866, and the 1903 Death Index shows a John James Stewart for Newcastle having been born about 1865. This could be the same person but I have been unable to prove this connection.
The 1901 census index provides me with far too many entries for John Steward being born around 1875.
I found an interesting family in Send & Ripley parish registers but a generation too early.
Are you able to help link in to any of the above data?
- Steward Hogan.
