John Henry Stier, a merchant, married sisters.He first married Mary Peters, and after her death, married her sister, Caroline Peters.John Henry and Caroline Stier were the parents of Julia Stier, who married Louis Armand “L.A.” Benoist, Sr. at Natchez.Henry was the son ofJohann Phillip Stier (b. July 3, 1787, confirmed 1801, d. 1854 at Natchez) and Martha Elizabeth Stetefeld, daughter of Heinrich Stetefeld, tailormaster at Marburg, .Johann Phillip Stier and Martha Elizabeth Stetefeld married on the 19th after Trinity in 1813 at Marburg.
John Henry Stier was born Marburg, Germany March 24, 1816 and died May 8, 1874.On November 14, 1849, John married Julia’s mother, Caroline Juliane Dorothea Peters.Tradition is that he arrived at New York in 1836 and traveled to Lexington, KY where he worked as cabinet maker for Knobe Piano Co.He then moved to Natchez, and in 1844, Henry Stier, late the subject of William II, Duke of Hesse, Cassel, became a citizen of the United States according to minutes of the Circuit Court at Natchez. Henry served as 60 day man in Civil War at Bowling Green, KY. according to tradition and served in Company A, 1 (Patton’s) Mississippi Infantry during the War Between the States.He is listed in the Natchez Light Infantry Privates under the command of Capt. Henry Latrop.Company Muster Roll shows him at Corinth, MS with one Mississippi rifle.When he died, his funeral was at his residence at 615 Washington Street, at 5:00 on May 9, 1874.He was an alderman and a member of the Protection Fire Company No. 3 and Concord Lodge No. 127 OOF, and German Benevolent Society.

(1) John Peters Stier (b. April 23, 1843, d. December 19, 1889) m. Frances Stedman (Aurora, Indiana).He is listed as a private under Capt. W.S. Lowell, Quitman Light Artillery (Independent Battery), enlisted April 9, 1861.
(2) Julius Augustus Stier (b. December 15, 1848, d. February 7, 1823???) m. Frances Hamilton (or Parker?) of St. Louis.

John Henry Stier’s home was first at the corner of State and Pearl and then at 615 Washington Street in Natchez.The 615 Washington Street is known as the Caroline Stier House.
