This is not my line of Stegall, but I firmly believe the Burrus children "adopted" the Sapp surname (legal or otherwise).

In the pension files, James B. Stegall (son of William T. and Jane C. Stegall) states:

"My mother's maiden name was Jane C. Sapp and she married my father March 1, 1854 in Fayette Co. Illinois, the ceremony being performed by Sam'l Arnold, JP. Neither had been married before. My mother applied for half pay pension (Sec. BJS) Febry 14, 1862 - but it was rejected. She afterwards married Joseph C. Long and died in Fayette Co. Ill. March 17, 1864."
.....
"Wm T. Stigall, my father, was a farmer prior to enlistment and lived for 5 years or more in Fayette Co. ILL, 1/2 mile from _____ City. He was ____ so far as I know. Of course I was a small child at the time and the testimony I furnish is from facts learned through my uncle - Isaac Sapp - now at La Prairie, Adams Co. IL and Shelby Arnold - now at Moark, Ark and from general hearsay. Both of these men knew father before enlistment and were with him in Co. C. 6 MO Vol Inf."

The census taken 27 August 1850 was only a year after the marriage of Daniel Sapp and Elizabeth Burrus, and it appears that the children were still known as Buris. It is obvious that in later years they used the surname of Sapp.

Also, if the census ages for Jane C. are near correct, she was only age 15 or so when she married William T. Stegall. So there was really no time for Jane to have earlier been married to a Mr. Sapp.
