Stillwell Hotel Co. Appellant, v. William H. Anderson, Respondent.
Counsel J.E. Stillwell, Robert E. Austin and John N. Helmick for Appellant.
Since I grew up in L.A. and a Stillwell descendant I did research and found out J.E. Stillwell and I share the same ancestors.
J.E. (John Edward) Stillwell, born Dec. 15, 1864, Haldimand Cty, Ontario, Canada, died Mar. 2, 1938 South Pasadena, California. He is buried in San Gabriel Valley Cemetery, California.
He married Ada Florence Taylor, 1870-1954. They had two children that I know of. Mary Louise Stillwell 1905-1979, was born in Kansas and died in Los Angeles. Son John Jr.died at age 20 in 1928 from double pneumonia. He was a student at Stanford University, went to Europe for the summer and fall returning home for Christmas and died Dec. 27, 1928. He would have graduated in 1929.
J.E. Stillwell’s father and family moved from Canada to Big Rapids, MI. J.E. worked as a wood turn in his father’s furniture manufacturing business, Stillwell and Son's. He graduated high school in 1884, graduated from University of MI in 1888, studied law and entered into practice in Seneca, Kansas. He moved to Pasadena, CA in June 1906, moved back to KS in 1907 due to financial panic and homesickness and moved back to Pomona in June of 1908. These are his ancestors:
Father, Rev. Thomas B. Stillwell, 1809-1904, Baptist Minister of Sherbrook Church in Canada and several others Churches. He married Elisabeth Herstad in 1826.
Grandfather, David Stillwellborn in NewYork. He and his wife Anna Weeks were married in 1807 at First Presbyterian Church Smithstown, N.Y.
1st great grandfather, John Stillwell abt. 1735-1799 born in Gravesend, N. Y. He married Mary Mulliner.
2nd great grandfather, Nicholas Stillwell 1712-abt. 1780 born in Gravesend, N. Y. He married Martha.
3rd great grandfather, Nicholas Stillwell, 1688-1753 born in Gravesend, N.Y. He married Ann Hubbard.
4th great grandfather, Nicholas Stillwell and 2nd wife Catherine Huyberts Van Keuren, widow of Charles Morgan. Nicholas and Catherine were my 9th great grandparents. So my 8th great grandmother Rebecca Stillwell who was married to Abraham Emans was the sister of Nicholas Stillwell, J.E. Stillwell’s 3rd great grandfather. Also of interest is J.E. Stillwell’s brother Frank Alfred Stillwell, 1867-1950 is buried at Rosedale Cemetery in L.A.
