Dan-
Thanks for your response. After careful consideration of what you have written I have a couple of questions to ask.
Do you have record of your family in Ireland? Do you have record of them going to Ireland out of Germany? Sohn is definitely german(I attended highschool with one). It is doubtful that there was any french influence in Ireland in the 1700's, enough to affect the spelling of anyone's surname. The St.John Family have been in Ireland sinc the 1100's as they are on record in Tipperary since then. That line came over from England/Normandy after the Norman Conquest. Were they winemakers in Germany? If you Google Irish St.John Family you will find some records accounting for them and even the Irish Family Crest. I was told that perhaps the Irish St.John's were palatine from Germany, but to date I have not found any proof of that. I believe that Richard St.John Harris (the famous actor) was from Limerick,so perhaps you are a relative. His mother if I recall correctly has a non Irish sounding first name (Mildred) perhaps it is of German origin.
The name Sohn also sounds like the french,"Saens", Saint-Saens being prevalent Norman surname. Hmmm.
Sorry to brainstorm here, btw, are you now a St.John? Any idea if there are records of them ever being Sohn?
Cheers.
