Jerome,
I do have my St John back to the 1780s in Rathkeale, County Limerick, IRE: Philip St John married to Ann Dolmage 1784.
Their sons, George (mine) and Philip both come to Ontario, CAN by the 1820s.
As for earlier probable ancestors, Philip Son and brother Elias Sohn, they were Palatine immigrants.I have my information from Hank Jones who has published several Palatine references. His information shows that Elias came to Rotterdam, Holland in 1709and then to Ireland.Brother Philip came the same route in 1715.Their origin was Dietenhausen, GER.I have a marriage for Philip to Anna Catherine Kuhn at Hessischen, Ger.As they came as skilled tradesmen, vinedressers, in the wine industry, which helps me to think they were possibly French Huguenots that had earlier left to the east (France to Germany). It was a widespread movement of skilled craftsmen doing so.Unfortunately, the French seem to have destroyed many records in their anger over this.It could seem to be likely as winemaking also was so strong in Alsace, one of the regions shared by Germany and France.
Ballingrane and Rathkeale, IRE are the geography for my St John. Both Philip and Elias are repeated names in the family and help me to believe that Hank Jones' information to be fairly sound. His book, THE PALATINE FAMILIES, was originally published in 1990 and he has since published a 3 volume in 2002, though I can't locally get it in my hands.
I also have a Jasper Singeon at Ballengrane born in 1747 at Ballingrane, IRE.His will was proved in 1789.
How the name changed from Sohn/Son to St John is still a mystery.Jones states they were likely the same and became St John.By the way, my mother was a St. John
Dan
