Hi Phil,
Did you look down the block in Ionia for other familiar names. Another St.John is a few houses down (right on the familysearch page for Sylvester in the 1880 census) No other St.John seems to be nearby under the previous household prompt on that page.
Below is that other citation in Ionia, MI in 1990.
