On reflection, I seem to remember the name spelled Senjen and several other ways that make it sound quite different than Sansome.
Spelling was more an art than a science in those days. It was all phonetic and it didn't mean illiteracy to spell words differently. It seems like too much of a leap from sension to sansome but I will keep an open mind and try to find data either way.
