Regarding Matthias' occupation: It might be possible he was a "traveling" salesman and carried on two separate lives.

Concise Oxford English Dictionary 2008 Oxford University Press:
chandler /ˈtʃɑːndlə/
1 (also ship chandler) a dealer in supplies and equipment for ships and boats.
2 historical a dealer in household items such as oil and groceries.
chandlery noun (pl. chandleries).
origin ME (denoting a candle maker or candle seller): from OFr. chandelier, from chandelle (see chandelier).
