I have been following this conversation and I keep being lead back to this site through my research into my family. I am from the UK. The Saint John line is my mothers side of the family.
In short - the family beleive they are linked to Lydiard Tregoze some how... there is a link somehwere... The only thing we know is this - my great grandmother had some bits n bobs from the sale of the Lydiard House - so somewhere there must be a link to Lydiard somehow.....
I have researched and thus far I have come to the fact that they were/are Huguenots, living in and around Kent. I have to this point found that the name Saint Jean is used in the time of around (1600's) spelling variations are huge.. and this is still a problem for me tracing them all..
My point to your conversation.. My 10th GG Grandfather is Listed as Nicaise/Nicage ( Nicholas in english) he died in 1644 not long after one of his children was born.. I have no wife because she is not on the online register... however.. the Saint Jeans were a huge family and I know I have to go back early in this family as we know they were in the UK for many years.... I would be interested to learn if Mathias is apart of this family.. not the Oliver st john one - the other matthias... he was born around the assumed time of Nicaise...
I just have a strange feeling that somehow this is all linked somehow... The family moved to Lonodn in the late C1600's because that was where all the weaving was concentrating... in saying this the family over the generations have ended up back in Canterbury for one reason or another...
One of my GG grandfathers was known as the little frenchman.. which in research all fits in...
My question to you is do we fit with Mathias somehow? Is he Nicaises brother or uncle? any help what so ever would be great.. anything no matter how small..
