My understanding is that the name Stock originated from the village of Stock in Essex. The name has high numbers in that County and also in the Avon area where there is another village called Stock.
It is possible that the village got its name from the Stock family, but I could not confirm whether there was a settlement there before the Norman conquest.
My family of Stocks were from Ashdon, Essex and prior to that Hempstead. Stock is my maiden name.
