Categories: Stockley/Stockeley/Stokeley/Stokley & Trent

In updating a VA file that involves these folks in TN, I found on the Accomack Co., VA Site that this name has been spelled in a great variety of ways. "Stoackly, Stoakley, Stockley, Stockely, Stokeley, Stokely, Stokely, Stokley, Stockley, Stockely, AND they as a family have the DONALDSON useage as a family first and middle naming! They are tied into the Hays/Hayes of East TN in that there was a Stockley Donaldson Hays from Davidson Co., TN and his mother was a Jane (Donelson/Donaldson) Hays, who was the sister of a Rachel (Donelson) (Robards) JACKSON, the wife of Pres. Andrew Jackson of TN. Jane & Rachel were daug.'s of a John & Rachel (Stockley) Donelson/Donaldson from Accomack Co., VA!

The lady who did the posting was connected then back to East TN thru her g.g.grands an Alfred Ramsey & Emeline (Haise/Hays) Ramsey and that SHE was connected to a Susan Hays born in NC, md. to a Stoakley Hays in TN. In searching for her, she came across the Stockley (Donelson) Hays from Davidson Co., TN and thus that above connection!

Her g. grandmother was a Lewallen/Lewellyn (various spellings also) and thusly they are connected all the way back to Virginia's Eastern Shore! Where that Lewallen (Richard) and his wife Gracie (Stokeley/Stokely) were md. in Norfork Co., VA, fought in the R.W., and moved to TN. Along the way Richard md. the Gracie Stokely in VA and a Parazeda Vowell/Powell in Anderson Co., TN. Now Richard's family was from Eastern Shore, but he was born in 1763 in Prince Edward Co., VA, died 5-3-1833 probably in Anderson Co., TN and md. Gracie in VA.

In the "Early East TN Taxpayers" wrote by Pollyanna Creekmore and published in 1980 the is in a section on Grainger Co., TN, a "List of Taxes & Taxable Property" in the bounds of a Capt. Isaac Lane, on the North side of the Clinch River, one Richd. Lewallen/Lewallin.

She looked at the marriage records for Norfork Co., VA and found: 30 March 1793, Richard Lewelling and Gracie STOKELEY, surety by an Eyrs / Ayers Stokeley. A 22 Dec. 1798 marriage of a Sally Stockley who was the sister in law of Richard. She did not know just how they hooked together?, as sisters or as a widow of a brother of Gracie's. or their relationship to Eyrs / Ayers Stokeley. Was he connected then to Eastern Shore STOCKLEY family and how, as there was an Ayers Stockley who was a ship's captain in Norfolk who was the right age to be the surety or Gracie! There is a supposition seems to indicate that Gracie Stokeley was born in Isle of Wright county in VA, as there is an Elizabeth Stokely on their Personal Property Tax List in 1787.

All this is asked because there was an Eyre Stokeley of Accomack Co., VA (d.11-25-1740) who was the s/o of a Francis Stockley and an Elizabeth Eyre. Since we have a supposed connection to our TN HENRY TRENT md. to Charity ????? who could be or was a Stockley/Stockeley/Stokeley from or thru Woods County in then WVA, now VA, up on the Ohio River, via a Stockley man, I have forgot his name, but he was from Accomack Co., VA, went to Wood Co., VA and then came down to Hawkins Co., TN by 1830 or so....... just abt. the time our HENRY TRENT shows up in records md. to Charity ??? , of whom a descent from a good number of yrs., out in CA, had traced her Stokeley's / Stockeley's from there all the way back to Accomack Co., VA. SO ARE ALL THESE NAMES connected???? I wonder???

Also in these postings if the reference that Elizabeth EYRE was the daug. of a John Eyre of Accomack Co., VA and an Elizabeth TILNEY. This Elizabeth had previously been md. to a Thomas BAGWELL of VA. Elizabeth had a sister, Priscila EYRE who md. the Samuel BURTON OF VA!!!! Now is all this a what???

As there is in Chalkeley's "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish of VA" and 1840 deposition that shows the EYRE family as having come to Berkeley Co., VA, (now WVA) from PA on their way to OH. She did not know if the two lines tied together or not?

Scott Trent - Nov 16, 2011 - Posted on my Grayson Co., VA Site, I asked the following supposition, I wonder if there are any idea's from these two family Sites???

In doing corrections on another VA chapter, and reading on the Accomack Co., VA Forum and in some of their postings I also found in these postings the fact that one of the men listed as being in the Capt. Lane's Company was a Stockley DONELSON/DONALDSON (b.1759) in Pittsylvania Co., VA, and he was a brother to Jane (Robards) Jackson and a son of John Donelson/Donaldson & Rachel Stockley of VA! This Stockley Donelson was a land surveyor and land speculator, who had extensive land holdings in East TN and was no doubt a "neighbor" of many of the previous folks! SO would the East TN names of Stockley and Donaldson come from some of these "neighbors" and could ALL of this be a real clue to Charity ???? Trent's name!!!!! ??????
