Benjamin Stow b. 1747 Middletown, Conn.
I have a Benjamin STOW, born 27 September 1747 in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut; married Lavinia (or "Lavinne") STILES on 30 March 1767 in Granville, Massachusetts.According to "The Stiles Family in America... 1702-1891" by Mary A. Stiles et al (page 180), "They emigrated to the Western Reserve, and settled in Nelson, Portage Co., Ohio, where they were living in 1830."The Stiles genealogy only lists one child, Charity, who married Nathaniel Bancroft in Granville and moved to Randolph in Portage County, Ohio.
Questions:1.Was Benjamin Stow in the Revolutionary War?According to the Rev. War Pensions database on the Fold3 website, a Benjamin Stow made an affidavit on behalf of a man named Bancroft who was filing a claim for a pension, and stated that they had served together.Granville was mentioned.
2.According to a history of Nelson, Portage Co., Ohio, a Benjamin Stow and two sons arrived in Nelson in 1803 along with six other families, among whom were men named Bancroft and Kennedy. This Benjamin Stow was still alive in 1815 and served as an early Justice, and an amusing anecdote is told about him.Is he the same Benjamin Stow who was born in 1747?
3.Several personal genealogical databases in the WorldConnect project on RootsWeb.com say that Benjamin Stow born in 1747 died in the 1790s.Where might there be a source for this date?It clearly conflicts with the information from the Stiles genealogy which says "they" (Benjamin and his wife) were living in 1830.But if it is true, the Benjamin Stow who arrived in 1803 in Nelson, Portage Co., Ohio obviously can't be the same man.
4.I would also like a complete list of the children of Benjamin Stow and Lavinia or Lavinne STILES, their dates, spouses, and sources of information that connect them with their parents.I found almost nothing on FamilySearch.
Thanks for any help from anyone who can make sense out of this mess.
