I seek the parents of my ancestor, Susan Barbrea Strader, born 30 March 1820, died 30 October, 1852. She married William N. Dow, 17 June 1848 in Jasper Co., Illinois.
A story is told about the area around Toledo, Ill, where an Indian woman was said to be married to my white ancestor. The woman being spoken of wasn't named, but by date, it was probably Susan Barbrea Strader.
It was said that she was a midwife, and rode a horse all over the countryside to deliver babies.
The story tells that she was asked to be the wife of a white man, but she refused to marry unless he married her in a church. It took two years (permission of the church?) before they could be married, but he did indeed marry her in the church. Susan Barbrea Strader, if this was a story about her, is now buried (Bear Creek Cemetery?) between the Drummond Cemetery at Neal, Cumberland County, Illinois and the town of Toledo, where Charles Newton Scoles married Martha Elizabeth Peterson, daughter of Mary Margaret Dow, daughter of William Dow and Susan Barbrea Strader.
One researcher, also descended from CNS and MEP, wrote that William Dow's wife was "either Susan or Barbrea" Strader. She was named Susan in the 1850 census, and "Miss Susan Strader" in the 1848 marriage record, but have nothing save family legend to prove "Barbrea".
Family legend lists her father as Ezra Strader and her mother as Margaret Harriett Lightfoot, but so far my research has failed to turn up either of these two people in the right time.
