Nicholas -- I should have read the later posts before I responded to this one.I was working oldest to newest.
Glad to see that you got back a couple of additional generations in the time between the first and last posts.Perhaps since then you have gone farther.
In case it's not repeating what you already know, I would note that the Rolla Strayer you mention must (because the given name is so unusual) be the boy of that name who appears as a four year old on the 1880 census of Logan County, Ohio, son of John W. Strayer.Years ago, I did a fair amount of research on the Logan County Strayer family, which I would be happy to share with you as time permits.
If I recall correctly, this family goes back to the W. Va. panhandle, and thence to Nicholas Strayer of York County, Pa.So it's very curious how your same given name would show up so many generations down the road.... if I have the right line here.
In short, despite the proximity of Greensburg, Pa. to the Cambria County Strayers descended from Mathias, it looks as though your descent takes a more circuitous route back to Pennsylvania.
