Streit Family of Green Spring, VA

Charles Streit (1782-1825), son of William Streit of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, came to Green Spring, Frederick County, VA from Bedford County, PA during the early 1800s. His relationship, if any, to the Rev. Christian Streit (1748-1812) of Winchester, has not been determined.

Charles Streit came to northern Frederick County to work in the building and lumber industry. He married a local girl, Catherine Fries, daughter of Martin and Catherine (Schaul) Fries, Aug. 16, 1804. Fries was a Pennsylvania German who migrated here during the late 1780s. Catherine Fries was born in 1785 and died Jan. 12, 1861. Charles Fries died April 27, 1825, at age 43. Both were buried in the historic Old Stone Church Cemetery at Green Spring. His father-in-law, Martin Fries, donated land for a school in 1812, and the Cemetery is on the same parcel of land.

The original Bible of Charles and Catherine Streit has been lost or destroyed. Fortunately, a descendant copied the Bible record and stored it among private papers. The notes were apparently forgotten and were rediscovered a century later, much to the delight of descendants. Copies of records are not as authentic as the originals, because of potential copying errors. However, this is a good example of records surviving because an individual made a copy of the original. All children were born in Frederick County.

Children of Charles and Catherine (Fries) Streit were:

1. George Streit was born Dec. 23, 1805 and died Oct. 3, 1872, in Berkeley County, W.Va. He married Mary Manor, Dec. 1, 1831, in Frederick County.

2. Elizabeth Streit was born Oct. 19, 1807, and died in 1837. Her husband was Solomon Glaize (1796-1878), son of George and Catherine (Hetzel) Glaize. They were married April 20, 1825 in Frederick County.

3. Margaret Ann Streit was born Oct. 16, 1810, and died Nov. 6, 1873, at Cross Junction, Frederick County. She married Isaac Shanholtz, son of Peter and Magdalena (Hott) Shanholtzer Jr. , Sept. 8, 1835. They bought the Jacob Null place along Isaac's Creek where Isaac operated a mill and farm.

4. Catherine Streit was born Feb. 21, 1813. She married William Mincer, Oct. 14, 1844. One source says that she married second to a Mr. Owens.

5. Mary Ann Streit was born Jan. 14, 1815. She married William Lynn, Oct. 19, 1835, in Frederick County.

6. Susan Streit was born Oct. 13, 1816 in Frederick County, and died Feb. 17, 1868. She married James C. Hott (1817-1891), son of John and Rebecca (Fries) Hott, Aug. 8, 1839. They lived in Frederick County.

7. Sarah Fries Streit was born Oct. 13, 1818, and died July 17, 1852. She married Joel Barrett, son of Benjamin and Sarah (Ward) Barrett, Sept. 5, 1837. They had at least eight children.

9. Jane Streit was born June 20, 1822 and died March 13, 1905. She married the Rev. Jacob Fries Hott, son of John and Margaret Rebecca (Fries) Hott, Aug. 17, 1843. Four of their sons served as ministers in the United Brethren in Christ Church.

10. John William Streit was born July 22, 1824, and died Dec. 18, 1891. He married Elizabeth A. Fries (1826-1905), Feb. 8, 1848, and they raised a large family in Frederick County.
