Interesting Page County Landmarks
I have this small booklet, which was put out by the Page County Heritage Commission.I don't see the year, but I probably bought it at least 20 years ago. There are many sketches of local places of interest, and a map in the back showing locations of all of them.
One sketch is of "Fort Egypt - This large log house, built of huge logs dovetailed at the corners, has a massive stone chimney in the center of the house. The building was built about 1758 by Jacob Strickler. His descendants lived here for many generations.Several of the rooms are very large and were probably used for meetings of the Mennonite Church in the community before any church buildings were built.Jacob Strickler was one of the early leaders of the Mennonite Church. This home is located near the center of the 1,000 acre tract granted to the pioneer Abraham Strickler in 1735 and called the Little Egypt Tract. This building has been restored by the present owners, the S.B. Hoover family, and is in an excellent state of preservation. It contains a fortified cellar with loop holes for protection against Indian attacks."
