Richard Stringfellow born bet 1758-1760 in King George Co., VA., died Dec 06, 1830 in Barnwell District, SC. 1st wife: Nancy Mattocks...2nd wife: Elizabeth Weaver, daughter of John Weaver..she died abt. 1806. 3rd common-law wife: Catherine Scott, born bet. 1790-1799...died after 1831.
Catherine was Richards common-law wife at the time he died. After Richard died, his living children; John Reuben and Lucinda Stringfellow Isom contested Richard's will and challenged Catherine's status as Richard's widow. She was referred to in court papers as Mrs. Scott and was described as a "free woman of color." Richards brother, Henry, testified that he had not had any relationship with Richard since Richard "took up with the colored woman." The property at issue was Richards 600 acre parcel known as Stringfellow Mill Tract. As a result of the court action the land was sold for $360 to Chilton Packard. The court awarded Catherine Scott one third of the proceeds from the sale.
Children of Richards & Catherine's:
1. male Stringfellow, born bet 1821-1825
2. female Stringfellow, born bet 1821-1825
3. male Stringfellow, born bet 1826-1830
4. female Stringfellow, born bet 1826-1830
Probably all born in Barnwell Co., SC
Children of Richards and Elizabeth Weaver are:
1. Reuben Stringfellow, Sr. born abt 1780 in NC (probably Richmond Co.); died abt 1859.
2. Lucinda Stringfellow, born bet 1782-1793. She married John Isom.
3. Sarah Stringfellow, born bet 1782-1793. She died at about age 15.
No children listed by his first wife; Nancy Mattocks.
Richard was living in Barnwell County when the 1830 census was taken. Image 75 of 145 showsRichards household consisted of: 1 male aged 70-79, 1 female, 30-39, 1 male and 1 female 5-9 and 1 male and 1 female under 5. It is likely that the older female was Catherine and that the 4 children under age 10 were Richards children by her.
This info is taken from the book "The Stringfellow Family" By: Anitra R. Streett in June 2005. I have no proof and any of this...I just typed what was in the book about Richard Stringfellow.
I am searching James Stringfellow's line who I believe is one of Richards brothers but I have no proof as yet. James Stringfellow of born in NC but moved to Alabama before 1828 and married Rachel Baxter. So any info you run across about him will be appreciated.
Hope this info helps.
