Funeral services for James E. Stringfellow, Sr., retired Fulton businessman, were held from the Fulton Methodist Church on Feb. 3, 1948. Death came to “Uncle Jim”, as he was familiarly known by Fulton’s young and old on Sunday night, Feb. 1, following an illness of several years. The doctors’ attributed his final illness to a heart attack. Mr. Stringfellow came to Fulton from Memphis, Tenn., in 1924. When in Memphis he was in the mercantile business. Born in Olney, Ala, in 1874, he was 74 years old. Before making Fulton his home he had operated businesses in Gordo, Ala., Reform, Ala., Aliceville, Ala., and Scooba, Miss. A member of the Methodist Church, “Uncle Jim” was a friend to both young and old. During his active years he operated a café and confectioner’s shop in Fulton, which was the meeting place of Fulton’s youth and quite a large number of Fulton’s prominent citizens. “Uncle Jim” had a soft spot in his heart for his young friends, and they could always count on him for a free soda or sandwich if their allowance had been spent. He also felt kindly to the “down-and-outter” who might come in asking for a cup of coffee, and many a bum has enjoyed a full meal at his expense. Interment was in the Fulton Cemetery with Hawkins Funeral Home in charge.

Survivors included his wife, Mrs. Jettie Stringfellow; and the following children, Mrs. Katherine Fuchs of Memphis, Mrs. Burmah Hartley of Jacksonville, Fla., James E. Stringfellow, Jr. of Chicago, Ill., John Collins Stringfellow of Reform, Ala., James Edward Stringfellow III of Fulton and Betty Carol Stringfellow of Fulton.

Pallbearers were: Aubrey Jones, Joe Sheffield, Ludie McKee, Grady Gaither, E. D. Wright and D. C. Harden.
