Elijah and Elisha tended to be interchangeable, rather like Irwin and Irvin. If you go by the rule that you give preference to the more contemporary, first hand record, you would have to opt for Elisha over Elijah. Death certificates are particularly unreliable because they depend on the knowledge of the informant. I discuss this problem on my web site:

The bottom line is we'll probably never know what name he was given at birth because he mostly went by "Eli" as an adult.
