Hi Cousins,
Both Hoyles and Stroups were in Lincoln Co., N.C. before moving to S.C., Ga., then Arkansas, and the research about Matthias Stroop is mine, with 1660 my estimate based on his immigration records.Have learned recently that Jacob Sr., b 1724, Md., ancestor of the line you are tracing into later locations, had a brother, Peter "Stropes", b 1728 Md. who continued to use the correct name pronunciation used by the immigrant Mathias in the Maryland records I found for him.The correct name spelling is STROOPS or STROOPE, and it's Holland Dutch, not German, many of the name in modern Amsterdam, but this name is not unknown in Germany, even in Dortmund, which may have been where the immigrant lived prior to America. Both Jacob and his younger brother Peter Stropes were sons of an Adam Stroop or Strope, b c1690 - 1700 in East Md., and this is the man we all need to research, along with German records for Evangelical Lutheran Churches in or near Dortmund, Westphalia. In my opinion, any GenForum Listing for immigrant Matthias Stroop or Strope should relate to that man, and not to a descendant many generations removed.Jacob b. 1724 was the 3rd generation in America, and his grandson Jacob "The Iron Master" of S.C. and Ga. (b 1771) was the 5th generation. Those who migrated into Arkansas were at least 6 or 7 generations away from Matthias, although his German Bible (now destroyed), was owned at one time in Fort Smith, then taken to Texarkana. It would help if somebody in Arkansas could find a modern person who copied records from it.Jesse Ardell Stroupe (now deceased) owner of Stroupe's Candy Co., in Texarkana, was the last person I can find who knew about it, but somebody in his family once owned it, probably a brother or sister.
