In Reply to: John Henry Stroup and Sadie (Sarah ?) Meetch by Greg Straub of 1120

I show Rebecca "Beckie" MARTZ as born 1836/7 in PA, daughter of William D. MARTZ & Henrietta/Harriet HOOVER. Rebecca was the first wife of John STRAUB, who married second Sarah J. SHIPE.

John Henry STRAUB / STROUP was born Sep 1857, probably in Wiconisco Twp., Dauphin Co., PA, where his parents are found in the 1860 Census. John Henry's mother then dies, and in the 1870 census we find John Henry living with his aunt, Harriet (MARTZ) MATTER, still in Wiconisco Twp. In the 1880 census, John Henry is living with his maternal grandparents in Lykens, Dauphin Co., PA. (Guess he didn't like his step-mother...)

About 1889/90, John Henry STROUP married Sarah E. "Sadie" MEETCH (b. Aug 1869, PA), daughter of William Buchanan MEETCH & Mary C. SHAFFER [more on this family in the Meetch Forum here at, beginning with William's parents, Joseph Brubaker MEETCH & Alice Ann BUCHANAN].

John Henry & Sarah/Sadie (MEETCH) STROUP are found in the 1900 and 1910 censuses of Millerburg, Dauphin Co., PA, and have the two sons you mentioned: John Meetch STROUP (b. Jan 1890) and Claude M. STROUP (b. Mar 1897). I haven't found John Henry or Sarah/Sadie in the 1920 or 1930 census.

Claude M. STROUP married ca. 1927/8 to a Josephine (b. 1904/5, PA) and is found in the 1930 census of Harrisburg, PA, with a daughter Patricia A. STROUP (b. Nov 1929).

Everything I have (including documentation) is online at my web site in the form of linked family group sheets, which you can hook into from John Henry's page:

If you feel I've made any errors, please don't hesitate to correct me. And when are you going to find me a male STRAUB in this line for DNA testing?! The progenitor here is a real mystery.
