Private Major Frank Strout

so many times i find that people have my great great grandfather listed as Frank Strout! Major was his first name , Frank is his middle name. Major is the son of Enoch and Elizabeth Raymond Strout. He was from Bradford Maine. I have his official death record and his name is Major frank strout. my great grandfather his son Ernest stated on his picture his name was Major Strout. Land deeds state his name as major frank or M.F. Strout same as the census records do. His rank when he got out of the civil war is listed as Private, not Major. So why do people insist on dropping his first name?
