Actually, the site contradicts my understanding of key events in the life of my ancestors, William Sturgill of Grayson Co., Va., and his grandson Elihue (also "Elihu" in many records). This may be a very important lead in clearing up some questions about Elihue, or it may just be an error.
The narrative under Elihue's mother, Mary "Polly" Sturgill Greer, states that William took Elihue to Kentucky. I had always understood that they actually went to Lawrence Co., Ohio. It is clear in the records that Elihue turns up in southern Illinois with a wife who is a Kentucky native by about 1852, but his exact movement between the Virginia/North Carolina region where he was born and Illinois have been unclear to me from the records. After his first wife died, he went with his several children to Lawrence Co., Ohio, where he remarried, around 1870. I had always understood that he was returning to this area where he had spent much of his childhood. Records show other Sturgills living in the vicinity.
But if Elihue did indeed reside in Kentucky for a significant portion of his childhood, that would be very significant and would help to resolve one of the big questions about him: Who was his first wife? Since the courthouse records from Illinois were destroyed a few years after her death, it's very hard to piece together.
Do you have any information on the source for the statement that William and Elihue went to Kentucky and any information on how long they were there?
