I have a tintype photograph of Rachel Waters Sturgill, wife of Joel Cass Sturgill, taken in her old age apparently in Sullivan County, Missouri.

Rachel died in 1862, and Joel returned to Scott County, Virginia, when his children and grandchildren left Missouri for Oregon. I suppose the photograph passed from him to his son Lewis James Sturgill and his wife, Lucinda Merinda Ward, with whom Joel stayed in Virginia. I am descended from their son, James Lewis Sturgill, and Mary A. Pearcy, who brought their family from Virginia to Texas County, Missouri, about 1893.

I have the tintype through my grandmother, Martha Sturgill Murray Geimer. The photograph is in damaged state but Rachel's face is visible. She even is holding a rifle, in true pioneer fashion.

Not being aware of any other photographs of Rachel that have survived, I would be glad to forward a copy via email to anyone wishing it.
