Early STUTZMAN families of Pennsylvania
OK, there seem to be two distinct branches of this early STUTZMAN family in Pennsylvania. We have a John Jacob STUTZMAN, an Evangelical Lutheran, who emigrated to Philadelphia in 1729.He had two sons who remained in the area the rest of their lives. Both were bound out to an Amish family for their father to get money to back to Europe.
One son, Jacob, seems to have retained the Amish religion of the family he was sold to, the other son, Christian, returned or kept the Evangelical Lutheran religion of their father.Much has been written about the son Jacob, but Christian's history seems to be less well-known.
The son Christian STUTZMAN, Sr. owned property in Philadelphia, he seems to have been involved in the Schuylkill Fishing Club in Philadelphia and rode with the First Pennsylvania Militia in the French/Indian War of 1754-1756 along with his associates from Berks Co., PA. They were under the command of Benjamin Franklin, the first chief of the PA Militia.Later Christian STUTZMAN, Sr. was with George Washington at Valley Forge during that cold winter of the American Revolution. His name appears as Christian STOLSMAN on the roster of the soldiers with Washington.Christian had a son, Christian STUTZMAN, Jr. who was also in the Revolution. The two Christians and their descendents from both lines remained faithful to the Evangelical Church.

All of my research into the STUTZMAN family began because my STUTZMAN grandmother wanted to know more about her brother who died in the Civil War.I found him, John B. STUTZMAN who was captured during the Civil War and died at a Confederate prison camp in North Carolina.
