Leolo C. Suber
Leolo Clara (Suber) Hawes
(1910-2006)
Leolo Hawes died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 in San Jose, California. She had led a long and productive life as a wife, mother, teacher, and librarian. She was known for her adventurous spirit and her willingness to accept new situations and places. She also staunchly supported her children in any of their endeavors.
Mrs. Hawes lived for over 96 years. She was born on February 5, 1910 in Deshler, Ohio. She was the second of four children of John and Gertrude Suber. Her father owned the Deshler Foundry and Machine Works – the major employer of this village of about 1500 people. Mrs. Hawes’ grandfather had founded the business. Before this, her ancestors had been farmers in the Pennsylvania Colony, prior to the Revolutionary War, and later, they were among the earliest settlers of Ohio.
Leolo Suber graduated from Ohio Northern University in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. It was at Ohio Northern that she met and married Orville W. Hawes. They were married at the school president’s home in 1934. She taught for one year before marriage.
Mr. and Mrs. Hawes lived in McClure, Paulding, Stryker, and Groveport, Ohio. After Ohio, they lived in Dunbar, West Virginia, Jamestown, North Dakota, and Crookston, Minnesota. When her three children were old enough, Mrs. Hawes returned to teaching. She taught elementary school in West Virginia, North Dakota, and Minnesota. In 1975, she retired from teaching and began working at the Hawes Printing Company in Crookston which she and her husband owned.
In 1977, Leolo and Orville Hawes sold their printing business and they moved to San Jose, California to be near their children. Her husband, who was her best friend and the love of her life, passed away there in 1984. After that, Mrs. Hawes continued to live in California for another 22 ½ years.
Leolo Hawes is lovingly remembered by her son Dennis Hawes, his wife Phyllis, and their sons Christopher and Timothy, all in San Jose, California, her daughter Jean Bye and her husband Cord in Hilton Head, South Carolina, and by her son Paul Hawes and his wife Sheila in Southern Pines, North Carolina. Additionally, she lives in the fond memories of her brother, Leon Suber in Worthington, Ohio, and her sister, Leoto Sloan, in Columbus, Ohio, her nieces and nephews in Ohio, and all who knew her.
