Mary [Rowland] Sugg; Amy Ann [Rowland] Jones; William, Samuel, & Alfred Rowland
Yes, the Wake Co., NC Gang is back to confuse you...
William Rowland (~1793 - ~1884/1885) of Raleigh, Wake Co., NC may have been my Fourth-Great-Grandfather through his daughter, Mary Ann [Rowland] Sugg, if and only if (iff) I can establish she and her husband, Ransom Sugg, were the parents of my known Great-Great-Grandfather Joseph “Joe” Sugg.
I believe it to be so, but it is not yet proven. It is known Joe was born and lived in Raleigh, and I can’t find another Joe Sugg or Suggs in the area that fits his age.It seems so likely, however, that I’ve gone ahead and worked on that family line.
Meanwhile, on to the Rowland mob.Per William Rowland’s will, his kids at the time of his death included:
• Mary [Rowland] Sugg, wife of Ransom Sugg (also seen as Suggs)
• Alfred Rowland (? – bef. 23 January 1885), husband of Frances “Fannie” W. Utley
• Samuel “Sam” Rowland (8 October 1815 – 9 August 1880), husband of (1) Kidey Taylor (m. 1850) and (2) Isabella A. Speight (m. 1856)
• Amy Ann [Rowland] Jones, wife of Jefferson John Quincy Jones
According to estate records, Alfred could have been an executor for his father’s estate, but died before he could qualify.Samuel, too, had died by then and the estate records reference Sam’s children, including E. Florence Rowland, Claudius “Claude” M. Rowland, George Rowland, Nat Rowland, and S. Newton Rowland.
Recently, I discovered there was an online listing of burials for Raleigh’s City Cemetery and, sure enough, there were Sugg family members there (no Rowlands, per se).Among them was a Mary Sugg, born about 1815, who died on 8 September 1890 and was buried here.
Given the family members buried therein, as well, I think this Mary is Mary [Rowland] Sugg:two of Ransom’s siblings, as well as a sister-in-law, are buried here; so is Mary and Ransom’s daughter, Lizzie, with whom Mary was living during the 1880 census.
I added both Mary Sugg and (if my suspicions are correct) her brother Samuel Rowland – plus other family members on that list – to Find-a-Grave.Indeed, I’ve added many Sugg and Rowland family members, as I’ve located them.
Online indicates Ransom died in February 1892…but where is he during the 1880 Census, when his wife, Mary Ann [Rowland] Sugg is living with their daughter, Rebecca [Sugg] Hunnicutt (wife of Artemus)?
When the list of Sam’s kids was first published online, Ransom’s date of death was left BLANK, which seems to indicate someone uncovered it, or believes they did, later on.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Ransom buried here, as well.
That being said:
Who can look up obits in the Raleigh area?I really want to see if it reveals anything about this Mary Sugg.
Who has the Rowland family Bible, apparently left to Amy Ann (Rowland) Jones?
Does anyone know when Amy Ann [Rowland] Jones died and where she’s buried?
How about Alfred Rowland, who died in 1885?
If you can answer these questions, post…even if you have clues.
If you can only answer my questions WITH questions, I’ll have to say up front there’s not much more I know.
Danke.
