I appreciate your followup post. The mention of O'Sullivan being a whole different clan is interesting, because that name can't be ruled out. My David made his manuscript dictation a full 50 years after the event he witnessed, and made the dictation from notes that may also have been incomplete or even to some extent no longer fully decipherable. O'Sullivan is a possibility that I had completely neglected. There were some obvious points in the manuscript where the transfer of information from 1853 to 1901 was blurred. One of the few things I thought would have been difficult to get wrong in relating this particular story, though, was the names of the two fighters. But David never mentions Sullivan's first name, and probably neglected to write it down in 1853. And with the notes being sometimes marginal, the last name certainly might have actually been O'Sullivan!
