Menni Surratt in NY 1735 & m. deJersey

Where to begin? I only suspect that my 7th g-grandmother is identifed in the Dutch Reformed Church of Tappan, Rockland Co., NY as being "Nenny Suratjer" mother of her baptized son Henry Jearsy (who is really Henry de Jersey) in 1835. In 1838, same church, she is identifed as "Menni Suratye", mother of her son, Peter Jearsy (who was really Peter de Jersey).

Because, when researching Rockland Co., NY, I have found that there were early settlers before 1735 with the surname Menni (also seen as Minnie); I seriously suspect that one of these two surnames was her given name. After studying the Dutch translation (or I should say the twisted way that surnames were converted into Dutch spellings), I seems only too likely that her surname, Suratje, was originally Surratt.

Secondly, It does not appear that Menni/Minnie Surratt and her husband, Henry de Jersey, were members of this Dutch Reformed Church in Tappan, Rockland Co. - I suspect that they did not even live in Tappan for any decent length of time (if ever), rather, it was a "church of convenience" where their sons could be baptized.

It would appear that Menni Surratt's husband Henry had leased land around 1745 (around 200 acres) of the Romapock Tract (Ramapo), land lying west of Kakayat (Kakiat) Patent in NY - part of what was divided by the partners of the patent of Chescacks. This is awfully close to the New Jersey border. Menni's son Henry (b.~1735) ended up settling in Clinton twp, Dutchess Co., New York while her other son, Peter (b.~1738) settled in Orange Co.,NY and Bergen Co., New Jersey.

Menni's son Henry married into the Osborn family,.... His wife, Elizabeth Osborn did descend from Dutch roots (Her g-grandfather, Claus Jansen Van Permerant & g-grandmother, Annetje Van Vorst, had settled in Kings Co., NY in the early 1600s; Elizabeth's grandparents, Cornelius Clausen (line later became Kuyper/Cuyper/Cooper) & Aaltje "Anne" Tunisen Bogaert (dau. of Theunis Bogaert & Sarah de Rapalje), were of Flatbrush, Kings Co., NY and of Upper Nyack, Orange Co., NY.) Captain Cornelius Kuyper (Cornelius Clausen) was well acquainted with the Minnie families of Nyack and was a Ramapo settler. - The Bogaert (Bogart) family was of Schoondrewwoed Utrecht Holland Neatherlands; Theunis was later of Amsterdam, Montgomery Co., NY and wife, Sarah de Rapalje was of Kings Co., NY later dying in Breulelen (todays Brooklyn.)

Menni's son Peter de Jersey married Annetje Serven (daughter of Jacob Serven & Catharina de Beer - I have also seen this surname as Servant, Server, and Servent. de Beer I have seen as Beer, Beers, Byer, and Beyr. - I suspect that Catharina de Beer was daugther of Hendrick Beer & Anna Gertrude Volckert.) Anyway, Annetje Serven's parents had their children baptized in Tappan, Clarkstown, & Hackensack. -- I have wondered if Menni Surratt had a sibling in New Jersey that drew Peter to that location or if Peter was drawn there through in-laws.

Another thought is that NJ is not a stretch from Maryland - The earlies Surratts I find in US are in Maryland & the south but none seem to have been here in this country in the 1730s other then our Minne living on the NY/NJ border. Delaware & New Jersey didn't become states until around 1787.

Anyone have any ideas about this woman? We suspect that her husband migrated from France (not the Brittish Isles) and it seems likely that she and Henry were married before migrating to N.America.

,... Rebecca
