Darren, The bro. of your James Wm. was John Wesley Sursa who m. Electra Cowger and went to Texas. They are my husband's grandparents. They came to Bosque Co. TX in the late 1880's.
Information from an uncle of my husband, said the original spelling was Searcy and that the 2 brothers left Tn and went to Il and changed the spelling. They had had a "falling out" with the kin folk back there.
The History of Jefferson Co, Il by Perin gave some info on the brothers, said they came with the Webbers and Yearwoods. Using a neat research trick, (that is to track an unusual spelled surname back to find a county) worked in this situation. Census index gave me the Yearwoods in Rutherford Co. Tn. And there in the 1820 census is James and John Sursa/Searcy along with the Webbers.
Perin's book has an error in that the father of James, John and sister Rebecca had served in the War of 1812. But records in Rutherford Co show he died in 1804. Records name wife Elizabeth and the 3 children.
Using an index of TN marriages, I found Richard Searcey and Elizabeth Carlile were m. in Knox co. TN Sept 24, 1798. Bondsman was James Carlisle. This same James Carlisle served as guardian to the children in Rutherford Co. when Richard died. He is probably Elizabeth's bro or father.
There are several Searcy families in Rutherford Co. The most prominant was W.W. Searcy. Now all these Searcys are tied into the big bunch back in NC. But I have not benn able to figure out who Richard belonged to. Lots of Richards, John, James and Wm.'s back there. The Searcys are of English orgin.
Hope this helps to answer a few questions.
Now would you like to send me your info on James Wm's family on down? I don't have anything on him. You can contact me direct. Your fellow researcher, Joy
