I saw your posting and can offer the following. My father, Charlie Robert Suthard, was born in Clinchport, Va. He had two brothers, Willy which was short for William, and Oscar whom was called OM. Both brothers names got changed to Suthers, not by choice, but because of misspelled military records, which stuck with them after being discharged. My father insisted, on keeping his original spelling of his name, and had to spend two extra weeks before being discharged at the end of WWII, having documents corrected. I don't know if there is any relationship, but it may help you with why the spelling was changed.

I have never met anyone with the last name of Suthard, I wasn't related to.
