Although I don't think we're talking about the same John Swain, there aren't that many Swains in Ireland, so thought I'd write anyway. Where in Ireland was your John born? I have a John Swain who was married in Ballinakill, Queens Co (now Co Laois), however he married Catherine Moore (I went to Ireland and checked church records).I have her and three daughters in Utica, Oneida Co NY in the 1880 census stating they came to the US in 1870. I cannot rely on that, however, as I've found my Irish ancestors seem to make up things (ages, for example) as they go along! I have had a problem finding whether John Swain came with them or perhaps died in Ireland...or came and left them and married someone else! I do think there must have been some grown children left in Ireland. Your 1824 birthdate sounds reasonable for my John; his wife, Catherine was born in 1835. The three girls she brought to the US were teenagers at the time. So, keep me posted if you find any connection and I'll do the same!
