Richard -

Your Jacob E. Swain definitely ties into my Pennsylvania/Ohio Swains. The 1880 Census lists the following record for your Jacob:

Since he states his Dad was born in Pennsylvania and he himself was born in Preble County, Ohio, he is surely a descendant of the following line, so I will start at the beginning and you can work your way down.

I haven't been able yet to get farther back, but Isaac Swain was born in abt 1746 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He married Dorothy ? b. abt 1748 and they had the following children:

Jacob, Isaac, Dorothy, Orphelia, Phoebe, Cynthia, Susanna, Eber, and Andrew M..

Our (yours and mine) ancestor of this generation is Jacob Swain b. 06/01/1772 in Philadelphia PA and dying in Preble County, OH 07/13/1849. Jacob's wife was Elizabeth Bloom, b. 11/16/1783 in Philly and dying 07/20/1860 in Preble County, OH. Jacob and Elizabeth had 11 children. The first seven were born in Pennsylvania and the last 4 were born in Preble County, Ohio. These children were:

Alva "Alvy" M. Swain, Stephen, Ira, Susannah, Hannah, Dural (sometimes seen as Duval), John Loman, Polly, Patty, Elisha (pronounced Elijah), and Melinda. This is where your line and mine would split. My GGG Grandfather is Elisha Swain. In searching for yours, we know you had to come from Alva, Stephen, Ira or John Loman (sometimes seen as Louman) as these are the only other sons born in Pennsylvania - and your Jacob says his Dad was from there.

I cannot rule Stephen or John Loman out as I have never been able to confirm if they had any children. I do have family records for Ira and Alvy. I think Ira is your man. Per my records, Alvy had 7 kids with wife #1 and 7 kids with wife #2 and none of the 14 are named Jacob.

I would start with Ira Swain, if I were you, as he appears to be the most viable candidate and he had a son named Jacob, was born in PA, and your Jacob named his first son William Ira. Here's what I have for Ira:

Ira Swain was born 11/16/1805 in Bradford, PA. He married 1st Jane Shidler on 02/15/1827 and they had 10 kids:
Abigail, George S., Arabella (sometimes seens as Violetta -which would explain your Jacob's daughter's name), Susannah, John L., Jacob, Martin V., Elizabeth J., and Malinda (sometimes seen as Salinda). After Jane Shidler Swain died on 07/31/1849, Ira remarried Elizabeth Harris, but had no more children.

His son Jacob shows to have been born in 1837 in Preble County. Pretty solid bet that he's your man. I have family records for Ira's sons John L. and Martin V., but unfortunately do not have any more info on Jacob. I wonder what the "E" stood for in Jacob E.? Could it have been Elisha? That would be cool.

If you want me to send all of my Swain data, let me know. You can also reach me directly at JStaceylyn@aol.com.
