John&Nancy (Barnes) Swain -- Tyrrell Cty, NC, 1860

My g-grandfather was Edgar Lafayette Swain. According to his July 6, 1892 marriage license to Winnie White, I know that his parents are John and Nancy Swain and that Edgar was born in 1866. John was still alive in 1892 but Nancy was deceased with John and Edgar residents of Pasquotank County, NC. Winnie's parents are Joshua and Elizabeth (Banks) White of Pasquotank. Edgar's death certificate states that he was born in Tyrrell in 1864.

Family contacts tell me that Edgar had a brother named Richard and a sister named Gertie, and some relatives recall an Aunt Susie and and Uncle Abe. An A.W. Swain witnessed Edgar’s 1892 wedding and also helped to purchase some land in Pasquotank County, NC with Edgar in 1906. (Don’t know for certain if A.W. is “Uncle Abe” or not, but could be.) The relatives also say that Edgar came from a very large family – more than just two or three siblings.

The 1860 Tyrrell County Census has a John and Nancy (Barnes) Swain with four children: John, James, Susan A.E. and Dorcas. Of course, Edgar wouldn’t be there since he wasn’t born yet. The 1850 Census has John and Nancy with one child, William F., who must have died before 1860. I belive that this John Swain was the son of James Fox Swain and Martha Godwin, and that this Nancy was the daughter of Charles Barnes and Martha Gandy.

I have a contact who says that his g-grandmother was that Susan A.E. mentioned above, and that Susan had another brother named Abraham, whom they called “Uncle Abe.” Could this be the same "Uncle Abe" in my family?

Can anyone confirm or deny that the John and Nancy (Barnes) Swain listed in the Tyrrell 1860 Census had any additional children after 1860 – specifically Abraham, Edgar, Richard and Gertie? If so, then I will know that I can stop looking for the right John and Nancy. Also, did they move to Pasquotank County by 1870 since they don't show up in the Tyrrell 1870 Census?

Any help you might be able to provide would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

-- Eddie Swain
