ELLSWORTH. One "Elmer Ellsworth" was the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. He had been an aid to Abraham Lincoln in Illinois, and Lincoln held a funeral for him at the White House. He became a cult figure, "Remember Ellsworth" was a patriotic cry, and parents named babies after him. I have an Elmer Ellsworth SWAIN in my line and never understood until recently where this name came from. Now I spot people with the middle name "Ellsworth" all the time in the second half of the 19th Century. Type "Elmer Ellsworth" into Google and read the first 5 or 6 hits that come up. Cheers, -Michael Kagay
