I have William Swain 1798 Brunswick Co, NC married to Mary (I have seen Cato, I have seen Lane from this forum...no proof indicated for either name)
William and Mary married, had children (8 - from census records). Children were probably born in Wilcox and Coosa Co, Ala. The family ended up in Rusk Co, Tx (from 1850 and 1860 census records).
Children:
Joseph Hines Swain b c1823
Mary Jane b c1825 (my ancestor - m Calvin Stidham)
Sylvester b c1826
William b c1831
Thomas b c1834
Martha b c1836
Elizabeth b c1839
Sarah b c1841
William died bet 1860-1870. Mary is shown on the 1870 Rusk County census with son Thomas.
I want to go back further with this line, but need clarification on Mary's name. I thought maybe she was married twice, hence the confusion about her surname. but she was about 18 when she married William, therefore I believe she was only married to him.
I have not found a marriage record, and with the number of times courthouses burn in this country, I'm not sure I will find one.
If anyone has proof, not just what another researcher said, please clear this up for me.
I tend to believe CATo is her surname as the person who gave me this name seems to have done a lot of research and has posted quite a lot of information on this forum. I have seen this name from more peolpe than the other. But as a serious researcher I want to be sure.
